Smart Off Road

David got an awesome internship opportunity this fall. We didn't even have to move our family out of town for the experience as he only has to drive 6 minutes into Rexburg! We really are blessed!

He works in research, development and testing for a company that builds mini buggies. Does this sound like anything he would have interest or experience in?

SMART OFF ROAD BUGGY... everyone wonders what they are. Well to make the long story short they finally got their "design, built from the ground up" prototype on the testing track just this past Friday. HOORAY!

Look at this bad boy!
It is a prototype so a bit rough around the edges and still needs some parts, but it is a go for testing and production.

They were hard up for models for their photo shoot, so... they settled for me! It was fun to see the things that David has been working on, like the front suspension. I can definately tell it is his work. He designed it and his boss keeps saying it is better than he could even imagine it to be. Yes, I have bragging rights!

Here's the little bopper in skeleton form. No engine yet, but hooray... a complete frame! On wheels even!

Another view of the buggy as they tested it Friday. We are taking a vote... who likes the fenders on this thing? Left side cover on top or Right side fender cover on the bottom?

For those who are technically curious....
Buggy tech information:
8" front suspension travel
8" rear suspension travel
Fox shocks all around
Now Subaru 7HP, 4000 RPM engine, soon Subaru 15HP, 7000 RPM engine (YIKES!)
Projected weight 300 pounds (and can fit in your front vest pocket! not bad!)
Drivers range from David's 5'7" and 155 lbs to Skyler's 6'3" and 210 lbs (They are pretty much Thing 1 and Thing 2!)

The Last Leaf?

We love watching the colors of the leaves change. The kids have really noticed them this fall and really enjoy playing in the piles in our yard, at the park and in the church parking lot. We keep thinking that it won't be long until the last leaf falls and the snow will be here. I'll be glad to enjoy the leaves getting tracked into the house forever if we can avoid the puddles the tracked snow makes as winter comes and never seems to leave!

Note: Zachary would be missing from the following pictures, because he is a big school kid and we were playing on a school day. Ironically enough, that day he brought home a backpack full of... leaves!

Joshua knows that if you want to play you have to first get the work done!

A pretty picture of Macey working on her leaf pile. We got a good laugh at the neighbor kids as they were working on their leaf piles too. Since they planted trees this year they don't have much for leaves in their yard, so they were hauling buckets of leaves from their cousins' house down the road! It was quite funny to see them all hauling bucket after bucket of leaves to their yard to build their leaf fort. I think it was probably their mother's devious plan to get them to expend some energy for the day. I'll bet they all slept very, very well!

Nathan loves to be outside. He loves to explore and be involved in whatever the big kids are doing. As one can see here, he was very curious about the leaf piles.

Our silly kids! They make me smile!

Lessons From Dr Seuss

Image from CyberSeuss

I often find inspiration in the most unexpected places. God knows just when I need a little boost to help me through my days. Here is my most recent "kick in the pants" reminder to Keep Movin' Forward. It is found in my most recent favorite book "I Had Trouble in getting to Solla Sollew", By Dr Seuss.

One Man's Junk, Another's Treasure

We went looking for adventure and we found it at our local DI! The kids found some toys to dig in the yard. They were out there all day Saturday while David cut down 4 trees with the help of our neighbors and some homeless college kids! (Thanks Jodi and Abbie!)

Zachary and David found some much needed building supplies at the DI. We are grateful for the people who donate things to DI. It is also nice to have a place for our own kids to rotate old toys for new ones!

Studies

Everyone asks how David's classes are going. Well... this is a photo taken during finals week about 10 days ago. David was working on some notes on his laptop with Nathan's help. David is such a great daddy. He tries so hard to balance all his responsibilities. He was really stressed at finals because he had to keep his grades up to "prove" himself in the program at BYU-I. He was also working hard to get a 3.0 cum GPA so he would qualify for the senior year smart grant. The blessings that come from hard work, doing all one can do and then relying on the Lord.....
FINAL ANSWER A A C+ B- A and Cum GPA 3.016!
Congratulations Daddy David! We Love You!

Adventures in Familyland

The house was quiet... too quiet. I was certain I would find mischief somewhere. To my surprise and great pleasure... Macey, Joshua and Zachary were playing Library.

Trying to find dinner? No... The fridge that came with the house was not keeping the milk cold. With tool in hand, David went to investigate with his trusted sidekick. Why he thought he needed  a step-stool we will never know!

A little note about our refrigerator adventure. We were trying to figure out how to get rid of the old one after we got the new one in. The power company actually paid us to come and get it! They gave us a very smart package of energy effeciency tips and $30.00 when they picked it up. The package said "See Ya Later Refrigerator". What clever cats they must have working for them!

Deluxe model slot car track built by the world's greatest auntie babysitter. Zachary was so impressed by the DVD supports and fly off the wall corners! They played with this for hours. Thanks Jodi!

We all love to get surprise visits from Auntie Jodi!

More of Zachary's photography. Macey just loves to be his model!

Joshua fell asleep sitting up-right on the couch while we were watching a movie one night. For some reason I couldn't get the photo to turn right side up. Anyway, he stayed right there for quite some time by his dad. I guess the back of his eyelids were more appealing than the show.

Macey loves to sing to Nathan. He was very interested in her glow stick.

The following photos were taken on April Fool's Day. I didn't think it was a very funny joke since we had taken pictures of the first flowers of spring just the day before! We ended up with about 4 inches of snow!
View of the neighbor's from our front door. It really felt like December instead of April.
Joshua wanted to watch Mickey's Christmas Carol. So we did. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em!

Everyone has been sick at our house for the last two weeks. It was hard on everybody, but Joshua had it the worst. Being so young he didn't really understand what was going on. He just knew mom wouldn't let him do anything. He couldn't leave the couch. He got really tired of me asking him if his stomach hurt and if he needed "The Bowl". Here he found his own solution!

Feb21, Macey's Birthday

Decorating crackers with the left over frosting bags.

Zachary's creation.

Joshua's creation didn't last long!

Thank goodness for swings!
Nathan's first experience in the swing allowed me to finally get Macey's cake decorated. It was two days late, but when given the option Macey wanted to wait instead of eating an un-iced cake. I will admit it's not quite as easy to get things done with a new family addition.

Make a wish Macey! I'll bet she wished for a pony!

Sharing the frosting off the candles. Who started that anyway?

The birthday party goers.
Even though we were two days late...
Macey ate up all the attention on her special day.

March 14th, Nathan's Blessing Day

Nathan - 7 weeks old
I only  got one photo with a smile.

Zachary's Photography

Zachary took my camera and went investigating today and look what he found...
Proof that spring has come to Sugar City!
I didn't think his pictures were to shabby for a 6-year-old!

Penny for Your Thoughts

My mom forwarded this story to me the other day. I liked the message so very well I thought it needed to find its way to our blog.

I always stop and pick up pennies I find because
of a poem I've heard:

See a Penny, pick it up and all the day you'll have Good Luck.
See a Penny, leave it lie and Good Luck will pass you by.

I have never heard this one before and I think
it a better reason for picking up pennies.

Pennies

You always hear the usual stories of pennies on the sidewalk
being good luck, gifts from angels, etc. This is the first
time I've ever heard this twist on the story. Gives you
something to think about.

Several years ago, a friend of mine and her husband were
invited to spend the weekend at the husband's employer's
home. My friend, Arlene, was nervous about the weekend.. The
boss was very wealthy, with a fine home on the waterway, and
cars costing more than her house. The first day and evening
went well, and Arlene was delighted to have this rare
glimpse into how the very wealthy live. The husband's
employer was quite generous as a host, and took them to the
finest restaurants. Arlene knew she would never have the
opportunity to indulge in this kind of extravagance again,
so was enjoying herself immensely. As the three of them
were about to enter an exclusive restaurant that evening,
the boss was walking slightly ahead of Arlene and her
husband. He stopped suddenly, looking down on the pavement
for a long, silent moment. Arlene wondered if she was
supposed to pass him. There was nothing on the ground except
a single darkened penny that someone had dropped, and a few
cigarette butts Still silent, the man reached down and
picked up the penny. He held it up and smiled, then put it
in his pocket as if he had found a great treasure.

How absurd! What need did this man have for a single penny? Why
would he even take the time to stop and pick it up?

Throughout dinner, the entire scene nagged at her. Finally,
she could stand it no longer. She casually mentioned that
her daughter once had a coin collection, and asked if the
penny he had found had been of some value. A smile crept
across the man's face as he reached into his pocket for the
penny and held it out for her to see. She had seen many
pennies before! What was the point of this?

'Look at it.' He said. 'Read what it says.'

She read the words ' United States of America '

'No, not that; read further.'

'One cent?'

'No, keep reading.'

'In God we Trust?'

'Yes!'

'And?'

'And if I trust in God, the name of God is holy, even on a
coin. Whenever I find a coin I see that inscription. It is
written on every single United States coin, but we never
seem to notice it! God drops a message right in front of me
telling me to trust Him? Who am I to pass it by? When I see
a coin, I pray, I stop to see if my trust IS in God at that
moment. I pick the coin up as a response to God; that I do
trust in Him. For a short time, at least, I cherish it as
if it were gold. I think it is God's way of starting a
conversation with me. Lucky for me , God is patient and
pennies are plentiful!'

When I was out shopping today, I found a penny on the sidewalk.
I stopped and picked it up, and realized that I had been worrying
and fretting in my mind about things I cannot change. I read the
words, 'In God We Trust,' and had to laugh. Yes, God, I get the
message. It seems that I have been finding an inordinate number
of pennies in the last few months, but then, pennies are plentiful!
And, God is patient..

My parents recently spent some time at our nation's capitol. They had the opportunity of visiting the Lincoln Memorial during their stay. Knowing of my 6-year-old son's thirst for knowledge, they collected some brochures from the area and mailed them to him upon their return home. Along with the brochures what do you suppose Grandpa sent his grandson? A penny, taped to a piece of paper with the instructions for my son to borrow his dad's magnifying glass to examine the back of the penny. Grandpa wondered if he could discover President Lincoln sitting inside the monument. We did indeed find Old Abe and upon further examination, what would you suppose we found? "In God We Trust." Message received! Thank you Grandpa for the $7.00 mailing of a simple cent.

For Great-Grandma Helen

A Grandmother to Love You

Having a grandmother to love you
is better than the frosting on the cake.
It's pennies in your pocket;
a picnic in the park;
and some cookies in her kitchen
that she will let you bake.

Oh, having a grandmother to love you
is better than a party every day.
It's supper on a Sunday;
sleeping over Monday;
a Grandmother to love you is like a holiday.

Oh, I am very lucky with a Grandmother to love!

We Love You Grandma Helen!

Direct from Heaven!

Nathan Van Christensen
Born Saturday 23 January 2010 at 12:52pm
8 lb 10.2 oz
20 inches long
Brown hair and dark gray eyes

Nathan with his first visitors.
Kelly, Mike and Caiden Christensen
Thanks to them for staying at the house with our three monkeys.

Nathan's second visitors.
Grandpa Van and Grandma Marie Christensen
They are wearing masks in an attempt to keep their colds at bay.
They also rescued daddy David from the hospital scene and took him to get a much needed hamburger.
Thanks Grandpa and Grandma!

Grandma Karen and Grandpa Ron brought our three little monkeys to see their new baby brother. They were so excited! Daddy David and Grandma Karen unwrapped Nathan to show them his tiny fingers and big feet. (big for a baby I suppose) Joshua saw Nathan's bare legs and exclaimed "New baby no have pants on!" These hospitals and all their budget cut backs!

Macey loves baby Nathan.

Zachary loves his new baby brother so much that he doesn't want to share him.

Grandpa Ron is spoiling Nathan already. He's only 7 hours old Grandpa!

Here Nathan is about 36 hours old and we are getting ready to go home! David likes to put the first outfit on our babies to bring them home. Wouldn't you know, this outfit has airplanes on it! What a proud daddy!

"I'm so glad when Daddy comes home, glad as I can be"
It's even better when he brings a new brother with him!

Hurray! We're all together at last!

Hello little one, Grandma's the name and spoilin' is my game!
